At home, work and in our community, women and girls must be safe and free from violence and have equal and fair treatment in the justice system. Our ground-breaking report, Breaking Cycles, Rebuilding Lives, led to the implementation of two programs.
In collaboration with the Housing Department of the City of San Jose and the Department of Correction, the Office of Women's Policy secured a federal appropriations grant from the Department of Justice to implement the Skills to Succeed Program created to facilitate and promote the successful integration of formerly incarcerated women into the community and workforce. The one-year pilot program was completed in 2012 with more than half of participants securing jobs or internships, enrolling in college or seeking their GED.
The Office of Women’s Policy, in partnership with the Commission on the Status of Women and the Department of Correction, operate a Jail Monitoring Program of the Women’s Facilities in Santa Clara County with quarterly observation tours and annual reports to the Board of Supervisors. The work will include implementation of Gender Responsive Training to improve programs, services and management of the Women’s Facilities and the establishment of a Gender Responsive Protocol for the Dept. of Correction.
